Some more information about
'Domaine Sylvain Bailly'

The family estate of Sylvain Bailly is located in Bué, in the heart of the Sancerre appellation. The first generation of winemakers dates back to the 18th century. The vineyards extend across the communes of Sancerre, Bué, Crézancy, and Montigny. The “Caillottes,” a hard, stony limestone soil, imparts fruitiness and finesse to the wines, while the “Terre Blanches,” millions-of-years-old Kimmeridgian limestone layers containing a fair amount of clay, give the wines structure and richness.

In 1955, the vineyard expanded into the Quincy appellation. The vast Quincy plateau has a unique character, consisting of limestone deposits from an ancient local lake. The soil is a mixture of shells and clay, with sand and gravel in the upper layers brought in by the Cher River.

The vineyards are cultivated with great respect for nature. Sustainability and efficiency are central to the Bailly family, ensuring minimal impact on the environment.

The terroir

The soil mainly consists of limestone-rich "caillottes" (small pebbles) and clay-limestone "terres blanches" (Kimmeridgian marls), which give the wines a mineral and fresh character.

This geological formation dates back to the Jurassic period of the Secondary Era.

Winemaking in the Loire

The Loire Valley is one of France’s most diverse wine regions, stretching from the central vineyards near Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé to the Atlantic coast. The region benefits from a warm temperate climate with regular rainfall, which ensures healthy vine growth and consistent grape ripening.
